Few bands captured the late 1980s Manchester moment quite like Inspiral Carpets. Built around swirling organs, distorted guitars and a psychedelic undertow, they came up alongside the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays in the Madchester scene and turned it into serious chart success. Their debut album Life hit number 2 in the UK in 1990, propelled by the top 20 single "This Is How It Feels", and they kept the run going with Beast Inside, Revenge of the Goldfish and Devil Hopping, the last of which featured a collaboration with Mark E. Smith on the top 20 hit "I Want You". A notable footnote: Noel Gallagher spent time as one of their roadies before a certain band came calling. After splitting in 1995 and reforming in 2003, Inspiral Carpets have had a stop start relationship with activity ever since. The death of drummer Craig Gill in 2016 brought things to a halt, but the band announced a return in 2022 and went back on the road. Clint Boon's organ still sits at the heart of the sound, keeping that distinctly woolly, psychedelic feel intact.
