About

Also known as: Ivan Fischer, Ivan Fisher, イバーン・フィッシャー

Iván Fischer is one of those conductors who seems genuinely driven by ideas rather than routine. The Hungarian maestro founded the Budapest Festival Orchestra in 1983, and over the decades shaped it into one of Europe's most inventive ensembles, famous for letting musicians have a say in programming and for running everything from surprise programme concerts to open air events drawing tens of thousands. His recordings with the BFO for Philips Classics and Channel Classics have picked up Gramophone Awards, a Diapason d'Or de l'Annee, and several other honours, with Bartók, Liszt, Mahler and Brahms all well represented in the catalogue. Fischer is also a composer, and his works tend toward intimate combinations of voices and instruments. His one act opera The Red Heifer, written as a direct challenge to rising antisemitism in Hungary, premiered in Budapest in 2013. He has held principal posts at the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C., the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, and Kent Opera, and in 2020 the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra named him its honorary guest conductor.
