Jade Bird's punk flecked take on Americana and folk rock turned heads fast. Her 2017 debut EP Something American, recorded in upstate New York and produced by Simon Felice of The Felice Brothers, drew comparisons to country and folk rock while showing off a raw, emotionally direct songwriting voice. The following year her single "Lottery" hit number one on the Adult Alternative Songs chart and stayed there for three weeks, making her only the fifth female solo artist to top that chart since 2010. Her self titled debut album in 2019 landed to strong reviews, with NME calling it "a triumph", and picked up a nomination at the Americana Music Honors and Awards. She followed that up with her second album Different Kinds of Light in August 2021, cementing her reputation as one of the more interesting voices working at the intersection of indie folk and Americana.
