James Bay built his reputation on a sound that sits somewhere between soulful indie pop and rootsy rock, with his fedora and battered guitar becoming almost as recognisable as his voice. His 2015 debut album Chaos and the Calm, recorded at Blackbird Studio in Nashville with producer Jacquire King, went straight to number one in the UK and earned him three Grammy nominations and the Brit Award for Best British Male Solo Artist. Singles like "Hold Back the River" and "Let It Go" were certified multi platinum, and he played the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury that same year. His second album Electric Light shifted gears considerably, leaning into pop and R&B territory with hip hop influenced spoken word segments between tracks. He followed that with his third album Leap in 2022, recorded at the historic RCA Studio A in Nashville with producer Dave Cobb and featuring a collaboration with Brandon Flowers of the Killers. His fourth album Changes All the Time arrived in 2024, keeping him one of the more restlessly evolving artists in British pop.
