Leeds saxophonist and composer Jasmine Myra makes the kind of spiritual jazz that feels both lush and deeply considered. Signed to Gondwana Records after label head Matthew Halsall came knocking in 2019, she spent the pandemic writing her debut album Horizons, which landed in 2022 with dense, layered compositions drawing heavily on Kenny Wheeler's large ensemble approach. It was a serious statement for a debut. Her follow up, Rising, arrived in May 2024 and showed real growth, with Jazzwise noting her expanding confidence and poise as both soloist and composer. She pulls from a wide range of influences, citing Grover Washington Jr., Nala Sinephro, Shabaka Hutchings, and Soweto Kinch alongside Wheeler. A third album, Where Light Settles, is also listed in her discography, keeping things moving on the Gondwana imprint.
