Jennifer Rush co wrote one of the biggest singles of the 1980s, "The Power of Love", which sat at the top of the UK Singles Chart for five consecutive weeks in 1985 and became Britain's best selling song of that year. At the time it was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the best selling single by a female solo artist in British music history, a record it held until Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" came along in 1992. Born Heidi Stern in Queens, New York, she built her career largely in Europe, particularly Germany and the UK. Beyond that landmark hit, Rush put together a solid run of charting singles through the mid to late 1980s, including "Ring of Ice", "Destiny", "I Come Undone" and "Flames of Paradise", the last of which was a duet with Elton John. Her debut album Jennifer Rush spent 97 weeks on the West German chart and sold three million copies worldwide by 1988. She kept a presence into the 1990s with singles like "Tears in the Rain", proving "The Power of Love" was no fluke.
