Jennifer Warnes has one of the more quietly remarkable track records in American pop: three songs she performed won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The first was "It Goes Like It Goes" from the 1979 film Norma Rae, followed by "Up Where We Belong" with Joe Cocker for An Officer and a Gentleman, and then "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" with Bill Medley for Dirty Dancing. Both of the latter also earned her Grammy Awards for duo or group vocal performance. Beyond the blockbuster soundtracks, Warnes built a parallel career as one of Leonard Cohen's most trusted collaborators, touring with his band and singing on several of his albums across decades. Her 1987 tribute record Famous Blue Raincoat, devoted entirely to Cohen's songs, drew contributions from Stevie Ray Vaughan and remains a fan favourite. More recently she released "Just Breathe" in 2018 and "What Does Freedom Look Like?" in 2020, suggesting she has kept writing and recording on her own terms.
