About
Jim Black is a jazz drummer and composer from Daly City, California, who built his reputation on the Brooklyn scene after relocating there in 1991. He quickly became a go to collaborator, joining Tim Berne's Bloodcount, Dave Douglas's Tiny Bell Trio, and the Ellery Eskelin Trio, while also working alongside Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley, and Nels Cline, among many others. His credits as a sideman run to well over a hundred albums. Black has kept busy leading his own projects too. He co founded Pachora and then AlasNoAxis with Chris Speed, Skúli Sverrisson, and Hilmar Jensson, releasing several records with each. He is also a member of the trio Azul with Carlos Bica and Frank Möbus. On top of all that, he toured with Laurie Anderson and dug deep into electronic music, making his sound genuinely hard to pin down.
