About
John Doe co founded the LA punk band X back in 1976, and he is still an active member decades later. Along with Exene Cervenka, he wrote most of X's catalog, including songs from Wild Gift, which Rolling Stone, the Los Angeles Times, and The New York Times all named Record of the Year. His range is genuinely hard to pin down: he has written with Dave Alvin for The Blasters, covered country classics with the roots act The Knitters, and landed in Todd Haynes's Bob Dylan film I'm Not There, where Christian Bale lip synched his vocals in a key scene. As a solo artist he has put out close to a dozen records, moving across rock, folk, punk and country with ease. His 2016 album The Westerner leaned into psychedelic soul, recorded out in the Arizona desert. He also co authored Under the Big Black Sun, a collective history of the LA punk scene told through the voices of people who actually lived it, and a follow up volume covering 1982 to 1987.
