About
Also known as: Johan Farnham, John Earnham, John Peter Farnham, Johnny Farnham
John Farnham is arguably the most successful solo artist in Australian pop history, and the numbers back that up. His 1986 album Whispering Jack spent 25 weeks at number one in Australia and remains the highest selling album by any Australian artist. The single from it, "You're the Voice", topped the Australian charts and cracked the top ten internationally. What makes his chart run even more remarkable is that he is the only Australian artist to have scored a number one record in six consecutive decades, a streak that runs from "Sadie (The Cleaning Lady)" in 1967 all the way through to live albums in the 2000s and 2010s. Along the way Farnham fronted Little River Band, toured with Stevie Nicks and Lionel Richie, and released collaborative albums with Olivia Newton John and Tom Jones. He also took on musical theatre, with lead roles in Charlie Girl, Pippin, and Jesus Christ Superstar. Australian musicologist Ian McFarlane put it plainly, calling him "the most successful solo artist in the history of Australian rock and pop". In 2022 Farnham underwent surgery for a cancerous tumour in his mouth, and in 2026 he confirmed that performing on stage was no longer possible for him.
