About

John Illsley is the bassist who anchored Dire Straits from their scrappy south London beginnings all the way through to the band's dissolution in 1995, making him and Mark Knopfler the only two members to stick around for the whole ride. As one of the four founding members alongside Knopfler, his brother David, and drummer Pick Withers, Illsley was central to the band's sound across every studio album, contributing bass and backing vocals, harmonising with Knopfler's guitar driven lead throughout. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Dire Straits in 2018 and delivered the speech on the band's behalf. Outside of Dire Straits, Illsley released solo albums including Never Told a Soul and Glass, both featuring Knopfler on guitar. A chance encounter in a Leicestershire pub in 2005 with Irish Celtic rock group Cunla pulled him back to the stage for the first time since 1993, leading to a live album recorded in France and a collaboration with singer songwriter Greg Pearle. He also co wrote the song "One" with Pearle and Paul Brady, which became the theme for the Irish film Anton. He published his autobiography, My Life in Dire Straits, in November 2021.
