Juana Molina spent the early 1990s as Argentina's most beloved sketch comedian, beloved enough to have her show syndicated across Latin America. Then, at the peak of that fame, she walked away from it all to make music. That decision did not go smoothly at first: her 1996 debut album Rara got a cold shoulder from Argentine critics and radio stations alike, so she relocated to Los Angeles, taught herself electronic production, and came back a different kind of artist entirely. What she built from there is genuinely singular. Her sound, often tagged as folktronica, layers acoustic guitar and voice over looping electronics and droning textures, creating something intimate and quietly disorienting at the same time. Each album has pushed that formula into stranger, more layered territory, earning her a devoted global following and praise from outlets like The Guardian, which called her one of the most experimental musicians in Argentina. Recent videos for tracks like Eras and Paraguaya Punk show she is still very much in that exploratory mode.
