Judas Priest are the band many people point to when they say "this is what heavy metal sounds like." The Guardian went as far as calling their 1980 album British Steel the record that defines the genre. Formed in Birmingham in 1969, they spent years grinding away without much commercial success before that sixth album finally brought mainstream attention. They've since sold over 50 million albums and are cited as a formative influence on speed metal, thrash metal and power metal, plus the hard rock and glam metal of the 1980s. The lineup has shifted over the decades. Singer Rob Halford left in 1992, Tim "Ripper" Owens filled in for two albums, and Halford came back in 2003. Richie Faulkner replaced K. K. Downing in 2011, and Scott Travis has held the drum seat since 1989. They took a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2010, saw their songs turn up in Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and went into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
