About

Julia Hagen plays a 1684 Francesco Ruggeri cello on loan, and the instrument suits her perfectly: this Austrian cellist has built a serious international career performing in venues from the Musikverein in Vienna to the Barbican Centre in London and Suntory Hall in Tokyo. Born in Salzburg, she has worked as both a soloist and a chamber musician, appearing with orchestras like the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, and at major festivals including the Salzburg Festival and the Beethovenfest in Bonn. Her debut disc, released in 2019 with pianist Annika Treutler, focused on Brahms sonatas, and Brahms keeps cropping up in her career. In 2025 she performed his Double Concerto with violinist Renaud Capuçon and the Bamberg Symphony under Jakub Hrůša at the Rheingau Musik Festival, a concert recorded by Arte. She has also shared the stage in chamber music with pianists including Khatia Buniatishvili, Marc André Hamelin and Igor Levit, and won the first prize at the International Cello Competition Mazzacurati in Turin in 2016.
