Julian Casablancas is probably best known as the voice and main songwriter behind the Strokes, the New York band whose debut album Is This It helped reshape guitar rock at the start of the 2000s. His writing drove the band's early run of records, from Is This It through Room on Fire and First Impressions of Earth, and he was back in the thick of it on The New Abnormal in 2020, the album that finally landed the Strokes a Grammy win. Beyond the Strokes, Casablancas has carved out serious space for himself as a solo artist and label founder. His 2009 solo debut Phrazes for the Young pushed into synth pop and experimental rock territory, with the buzzing, euphoric 11th Dimension as its breakout track. He also founded Cult Records, home to acts like Karen O and the Growlers. Since 2014 he has fronted the Voidz, a project he has described as a deliberate move away from commercial music, releasing Tyranny, Virtue and Like All Before You across a decade of restless experimentation.
