About
Few pianists have built a career as thoroughly devoted to the art of song as Julius Drake. Based in London, he has spent decades as one of the most sought after accompanists in classical music, working alongside singers including Ian Bostridge, Gerald Finley, Joyce DiDonato, and Alice Coote in some of the world's great venues, from the Wigmore Hall and the Concertgebouw to the historic Middle Temple Hall. He has a particular affinity for Robert Schumann, and his discography on Hyperion and other labels spans Schubert, Mahler, Britten, Grieg, Barber, and beyond. He also stepped in front of the camera for David Alden's 1997 Channel 4 film of Schubert's Winterreise, playing on screen alongside Bostridge. Away from performing, Drake teaches at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has served as artistic director of festivals including Leeds Lieder and the Machynlleth Festival in Wales.
