Karriem Riggins is a jazz drummer who also happens to be one of hip hop's most trusted beat makers. Early on he worked in bands led by Betty Carter, Roy Hargrove and bassist Ray Brown, then pivoted into production after meeting Common and J Dilla in 1996. He produced on Common's 1997 album One Day It'll All Make Sense, and later became the main producer on Black America Again. That work led to an Emmy, shared with Common and Robert Glasper, for the song Letter to the Free. His own records live on Stones Throw. Alone Together arrived in 2012 as an instrumental double LP, followed by Headnod Suite in 2017. He teams up with Madlib as the Jahari Massamba Unit, and with Common and Glasper he formed August Greene. Add credits alongside Paul McCartney, Kanye West, Erykah Badu and Norah Jones, and you get a rare player who moves easily between a jazz trio and a studio session. Most recently he formed the duo Gena with vocalist Liv.e.
