Keane built their name on something genuinely unusual for a rock band: no guitar at the centre of things, just piano driving everything. That choice paid off spectacularly when their debut album Hopes and Fears landed in 2004, topping the UK Albums Chart and winning the Brit Award for Best British Album. It went on to become one of the best selling albums in UK chart history, and by the end of the decade it ranked as the ninth best selling album of the 2000s in the UK. The Battle, East Sussex quartet kept the momentum going with Under the Iron Sea in 2006, which hit number one in the UK and debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200. From there they incorporated synthesisers more heavily into their sound on Perfect Symmetry and the Night Train EP, then returned to number one in the UK with Strangeland in 2012. After a break, they came back in 2019 with the album Cause and Effect, proving the piano forward approach still had plenty to say.
