Few artists can claim a gold record before they even have a proper blues career underway, but Keb' Mo' co wrote "Git Fiddler" with Jefferson Airplane violinist Papa John Creach, and that track on Jefferson Starship's Red Octopus hit number one on the Billboard 200 in 1975. Born Kevin Roosevelt Moore in Los Angeles, he spent the 1970s and 1980s working through R&B and blues bands, absorbing influences from players like Albert Collins and Big Joe Turner, before landing his own identity as a roots artist rooted in the Delta tradition. His 1994 self titled debut on Okeh Records drew directly from Robert Johnson, and the albums that followed, Just Like You, Slow Down and Keep It Simple, each earned him a Grammy in contemporary blues. His style pulls from folk, rock, jazz and country alongside the blues, and guest turns from Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and Dr. John along the way say a lot about the company he keeps. Songs of his have been covered by Joe Cocker, B.B. King, Robert Palmer and Tom Jones.
