About
Also known as: Kenshi Yonezu, 켄시 요네즈
Kenshi Yonezu is the only artist to rack up three RIAA certifications for Japanese language songs, and his song "Kick Back" became the first with Japanese lyrics to go Platinum in the United States. Before any of that, he was a Vocaloid producer called Hachi, uploading tracks built around Hatsune Miku and landing his first million view hit with "Musunde Hiraite Rasetsu to Mukuro". He stepped out under his own name and voice in 2012 with the album Diorama, which sold over 45,000 copies and became the biggest release on his indie label Balloom. The jump to a major label came in 2013 with the single "Santa Maria", followed by the album Yankee in 2014. His 2018 single "Lemon" turned into his biggest hit at home, topping the Billboard Japan Hot 100 year end chart two years running. He is also an illustrator, which makes sense given he once wanted to be a manga artist, and he has sold millions of copies physically and digitally in Japan.
