About

Also known as: Toma

Ketama built their reputation by doing something flamenco purists genuinely hated: pulling in salsa, reggae, funk, jazz, Brazilian music and African kora and making it all feel like one coherent thing. The Madrid trio, rooted in three serious flamenco dynasties, the Heredias, the Habichuelas and the Carmonas, released their debut in 1985 and kept pushing until their 2002 record Dame la Mano dropped hip hop and house into the mix too. La Pipa de Kif landed them coverage in The Times and the International Herald Tribune, and won world music prizes from NME and Folk Roots. Their biggest moment came with the live album De akí a Ketama, which shifted over a million copies, spent a year on the Spanish charts and swept the Ondas awards for Best Album and Best Spanish Group. A later studio follow up, Konfusión, still moved 300,000 copies and picked up another Ondas for Best Album in 1998. The group disbanded in 2004, leaving behind a catalogue that essentially defined new flamenco for a generation.
