An Austrian born cellist with Persian musical roots, Kian Soltani brings a rare combination of classical training and cultural heritage to his playing. The Washington Post once described his cello sound as having the softness and richness of caramel, with an easy warmth that draws the orchestra around him. That warmth comes through especially in the repertoire he gravitates toward, including Elgar's Cello Concerto, a work Elgar himself told friends was a truly great and vital composition, and which turned out to be the composer's final major piece. Soltani's Persian background and rigorous classical formation together shape a musical personality that feels both deeply rooted and genuinely adventurous.
