About
King Woman built their reputation on doom metal that hits with real emotional weight. Fronted by singer and guitarist Kristina Esfandiari, the San Francisco band wraps crushing, slow burn heaviness around lyrics that reckon with disturbing religious experiences, with one critic summing it up as someone who "lived through hell and came out swinging a microphone cord." Their 2017 debut full length Created in the Image of Suffering on Relapse Records drew serious praise from metal journalists, who flagged how it blended doom with shoegaze and sludge rock textures. Their 2021 follow up Celestial Blues pushed things further into grunge and post rock territory, and the tone shifted too: where the debut sat in darker places, Celestial Blues leaned toward transcendence and working through old wounds. Esfandiari keeps King Woman running alongside a handful of other projects, including the shoegaze act Miserable, and the band dropped the standalone single "Bury" in 2024.
