Messa have spent over a decade treating doom metal as a starting point rather than a destination. The Italian four piece operate under the banner of 'Scarlet Doom', a sound that pulls together prog, jazz, black metal and dark ambient into something genuinely their own. Regular appearances at Roadburn have cemented their reputation among listeners who treat heavy music as a serious art form. Their album 'The Spin', recorded with vintage 1980s equipment around Bassano del Grappa, shifts the focus toward early goth and dark wave textures, with echoes of Killing Joke and The Sisters of Mercy filtered through the band's own precision. The songs are more compact and tightly structured than earlier work, and vocalist Sara Bianchin steps further to the front, with a rawer thematic edge and a more direct delivery. Signing to Metal Blade Records marks a new chapter without softening what makes them interesting.
