About

Klaus Mäkelä holds an almost absurd number of top conducting posts for someone still in his twenties. The Finnish conductor and cellist is chief conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic and music director of the Orchestre de Paris, and from the 2027 to 2028 season he takes the helm at both the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Only the third conductor in Decca's history to hold an exclusive recording contract with the label, he has already put out a striking body of work, including the complete Sibelius symphonies with Oslo, Shostakovich's Fourth, Fifth and Sixth with the same orchestra, and Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring and The Firebird with the Orchestre de Paris. That Stravinsky disc earned him Conductor of the Year at the 2024 OPUS Klassik Awards, and he has also picked up the Sibelius Medal and been named a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. His recordings with the Orchestre de Paris have taken in Berlioz and Debussy alongside Stravinsky, while a joint disc of Sibelius and Prokofiev violin concertos features soloist Janine Jansen. He is also an accomplished cellist who has performed as soloist with several Finnish orchestras and at festivals across Finland.
