About
Before he ever picked up a baton, Santtu Matias Rouvali was making his name as a percussionist, playing with orchestras across Finland including the Lahti Symphony and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. That dual background gives him an unusually deep feel for rhythm and ensemble playing, and it shows in how orchestras respond to him. He went on to lead the Tampere Philharmonic for a decade, built a strong relationship with the Copenhagen Philharmonic, and took the helm of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra from the 2017 to 2018 season onward. Since the 2021 to 2022 season he has served as principal conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, one of the most prestigious posts in the classical world. His recording work spans labels including Ondine, Orfeo and Alpha Classics, with Sibelius featuring prominently alongside ballet repertoire. The Philharmonia's first release under his baton was a recording of Swan Lake, made in 2019 and released in September 2020.
