Few metal records from the early 90s hit as hard emotionally as Life of Agony's 1993 debut River Runs Red, which Rolling Stone later named one of the greatest metal albums of all time. The Brooklyn band built that record's raw, confessional sound from a mix of hardcore, heavy metal and rock, and it earned them a cult following up and down the East Coast before they'd even toured nationally. They followed it with Ugly in 1995, which cracked the Billboard 200 and landed them arena slots alongside Ozzy Osbourne and Korn. The band's story has been anything but straightforward. After several breakups and reunions, they came back strong with A Place Where There's No More Pain in 2017 and The Sound of Scars in 2019. Through it all, the core trio of vocalist Keith Caputo, bassist Alan Robert and guitarist Joey Z. has kept the band alive. Lately they have been celebrating three decades of Ugly with live shows, pulling out covers like Simple Minds' Don't You (Forget About Me) and clearly not slowing down.
