Few bands can claim a song that topped the year end Billboard Hot 100 chart without ever hitting number one on any weekly survey, but Lifehouse pulled it off with "Hanging by a Moment" in 2001. The Los Angeles rock band spent over a year on the chart with that track alone, and their debut album No Name Face eventually moved more than four million copies worldwide. AllMusic sums up their sound as a commercial blend of pop rock melody and throaty post grunge vocals, which probably explains why you've heard them in supermarkets and shopping malls as often as on the radio. Lifehouse has kept that sound remarkably consistent across seven studio albums, from Stanley Climbfall through to Out of the Wasteland in 2015. Singles like "You and Me", "First Time", and "Whatever It Takes" all charted across mainstream, adult top 40, and adult contemporary formats. The band also built a notable presence in pop culture through the TV series Smallville, where seven of their songs appeared across four seasons, with "Everything" famously used in the pilot and the show's 200th episode.
