Few bands can claim a sound as slippery and genre defying as Little Feat. Formed in Los Angeles in 1969 by Lowell George and Bill Payne, the band built its reputation on a richly layered mix of rock, New Orleans funk, blues and boogie that resisted easy categorisation. George's song "Willin'" became a genuine standard, later popularised by Linda Ronstadt, and the 1973 album Dixie Chicken remains a touchstone for anyone who wants to understand just how funky a rock band can get. After George died in 1979, the surviving members eventually regrouped in 1987 and kept the band alive through shifting lineups. The band's live reputation has always been a big part of the story, and their 1978 double album Waiting for Columbus is still held up as one of the great live records. Little Feat have kept at it well into recent years, with Sam's Place arriving in 2024 and Strike Up the Band following in 2025. Recent live footage from the Ryman Auditorium, featuring guests like Jamey Johnson and Charlie Starr, shows the band is far from coasting on nostalgia.
