Liza Ferschtman is one of those violinists who moves effortlessly between the solo spotlight and the intimacy of chamber music, and she does both with serious authority. The Dutch violinist won the Nederlandse Muziekprijs in 2006, and her recordings have drawn praise for a tone described as "nimble but never narrow" and playing that infuses every phrase with life and energy. Her 2004 debut album with pianist Bas Verheijden, covering sonatas by Franck, Poulenc and Debussy alongside works by Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky, landed a perfect ten from the Dutch music magazine Luister. Since 2007 she has served as artistic director of the Delft Chamber Music Festival, expanding its repertoire to include vocal and contemporary music. Memorable concert highlights include performing the complete Beethoven violin sonatas at the Concertgebouw with pianist Inon Barnatan, and tackling Heinrich Biber's Rosary Sonatas with all their wild scordatura tunings, which required seven violins on stage. Her recent recordings include Bach solo works and the Beethoven violin concerto with his own original cadenza.
