About
Named after the 1989 San Francisco earthquake, Loma Prieta have been one of the more uncompromising voices in American screamo and powerviolence since forming in 2005. Their music is dark and emotionally charged, mixing the raw aggression of hardcore with the fragile intensity of screamo, and their catalog spans releases on their own Discos Huelga label through to a deal with Deathwish Inc. That signing brought their fourth album I.V. in early 2012, which pulled strong reviews from Alternative Press and Exclaim! among others. Their fifth album Self Portrait, out in 2015, showed a different side: lyrically more direct and even positive compared to the deliberately opaque anger of earlier records, while still keeping the hardcore intensity fully intact. The lead single "Love" came with a music video and an exclusive B side, neatly summing up a band that keeps finding new angles within a genre they clearly care about deeply. They also share members with fellow San Francisco act Punch.
