Luka Bloom picked his stage name from two very deliberate sources: the title of Suzanne Vega's song about child abuse and the surname of the main character in James Joyce's Ulysses. That instinct for depth and eclecticism runs right through his work. Born Kevin Barry Moore in Newbridge, Ireland, he built a reputation on a frenetic strumming style once described as "stadium rock for the bedroom", but he has never been afraid to stretch. His 1991 album The Acoustic Motorbike included a folk take on LL Cool J's "I Need Love", which Rolling Stone noted as proof that experimenting across genres keeps traditions alive. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Bloom has moved between studio albums, live records and collaborative projects. Keeper of the Flame pulled together covers of everyone from ABBA to Bob Marley, while 2005's Innocence found him swapping steel strings for classical guitar and exploring Eastern European Romany influences. His 2021 release Out of the Blue is a fully instrumental record, showing he is still willing to push into new territory.
