Few bands dominated the UK singles chart the way Madness did between 1980 and 1986, racking up 214 weeks on the chart and tying with UB40 for the most weeks spent by any group there during that decade. Built around the Camden Town pub circuit and a love of Prince Buster's Jamaican ska, the seven piece grew from a scrappy north London outfit called the North London Invaders into one of the defining acts of the 2 Tone era. Their debut album One Step Beyond sat in the British charts for 78 weeks, and they followed it with a string of top ten hits including "Baggy Trousers", "It Must Be Love" and the number one "House of Fun". Stateside, "Our House" reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2000 they picked up the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection, a fitting nod to a catalogue that has aged remarkably well.
