About

Founded by Claudio Abbado in 1997 alongside former members of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra punched well above its weight from the start. Just a year in, their production of Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Aix en Provence festival turned heads worldwide, and the resulting world tour set the tone for everything that followed. About 45 musicians from 20 different countries make up the core ensemble, and the repertoire stretches from baroque to contemporary, with historical performance practice workshops baked into the schedule since 2004. The MCO runs without any state funding, which keeps it lean and flexible, assembling for individual projects and touring roughly 60 to 70 concerts a year. Their discography is seriously impressive, spanning Grammy winning Beethoven concerto recordings with Martha Argerich, prize laden work with Daniel Harding on Virgin Classics, and a Beethoven piano concerto cycle with longtime artistic partner Leif Ove Andsnes. Collaborators over the years read like a who's who: Cecilia Bartoli, Murray Perahia, Philippe Herreweghe, and many more.
