About
Also known as: Malgorzata Szpigiel, מלכה שפיגל
Malka Spigel's bass playing helped define the sound of Minimal Compact, the Israeli Belgian post punk outfit that built a devoted following across continental Europe through the 1980s. The band's minimal, funk tinged approach was way ahead of its time, and Spigel was right at the centre of it, co founding the group alongside Berry Sakharof and Samy Birnbach. One of the band's songs, sung by Malka herself, even ended up in Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire. Since then she has kept busy on multiple fronts. As a solo artist she has released records including Rosh Ballata, Hide, and Gliding, while her collaboration with husband Colin Newman has produced both albums and live records under their own swim label. She is also a core member of Githead, the band she formed with Newman and Robin Rimbaud in 2004, where her bass work brings a warmth and groove that critics singled out early on. On top of all that, she is a practising visual artist, working in video and photography and showing at spaces like the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Royal Festival Hall.
