About
Also known as: M. M.-Westernhagen, Marius Müller Westernhagen, Marius West, Westernhagen
Few German rock artists have stayed as relevant as Westernhagen across five decades. Since the mid 1970s, Marius Müller Westernhagen has built a reputation on electrifying live shows and songs his audiences practically sing back to him before he finishes the line. His decision to sing almost exclusively in German, in a market dominated by English language pop and rock, looked like a risky call early on, but it turned out to be his defining move, giving him a loyal following across multiple generations of fans. His song "Freiheit" became widely regarded as an anthem of German Reunification, which says plenty about how deeply his music embedded itself in the culture. Beyond music, he has taken on acting roles in films and radio, with screen credits stretching back to the late 1970s. He has reinvented his sound several times over the years without chasing trends, releasing everything from stripped back ballads to full on rock records. His 2022 album "Das eine Leben" was followed by a best of collection in 2023, and recent official video releases for tracks like "Sexy", "Weil ich dich liebe" and "Willenlos" show he is still very much active.
