About
Also known as: Marmelade, The Marmalade
Marmalade made history in January 1969 when their cover of "Ob La Di, Ob La Da" hit the top of the UK chart, making them the first Scottish act ever to do it. That was only part of a big run between 1968 and 1972, when they landed ten songs on the UK Singles Chart. "Reflections of My Life" was the other monster, reaching No. 3 in Britain and No. 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The road there was a long one. They started in Glasgow's east end in 1961 as the Gaylords, later billed as Dean Ford and the Gaylords, and put out four singles on EMI's Columbia label that never charted nationally. A move to London, a stint in Germany and a name change to the Marmalade in 1966 came before the hits did. They were known for tight close harmonies and an unusual setup with two bass players. The original members drifted off in the early 1970s, but the band still exists today with a newer lineup.
