About
Master has been a fixture in death metal since Paul Speckmann first got the band going in Chicago back in 1983, originally under the name Death Strike before settling on Master two years later. The group's 1985 demo recordings became legendary in underground tape trading circles, influencing grindcore pioneers like Napalm Death and Repulsion before Master even had an official full length out. Their self titled debut finally arrived in 1990 through Nuclear Blast, and their second record, On the Seventh Day God Created... Master, featured guitarist Paul Masvidal and is now considered a death metal classic. Speckmann eventually relocated to Czechia after joining the band Krabathor in 1999, and Master has been based there ever since, churning out records with a consistency most bands their age can't match. The current lineup with guitarist Aleš Nejezchleba and drummer Peter Bajči has proven to be the most stable in the band's history, producing albums like Vindictive Miscreant in 2018 and Saints Dispelled in 2024. Speckmann also keeps busy with the Speckmann Project as a side outlet, with a video for Fiends of Emptiness dropping at the end of 2022.
