About
Masters of Reality took their name from a misprint on the label of Black Sabbath's third album, which pretty much tells you where their heads are at. Formed in Syracuse in 1981 by Chris Goss and Tim Harrington, the band built a sound rooted in heavy blues rock, drawing on Black Sabbath, Cream, Led Zeppelin and King Crimson. Producer Rick Rubin caught a live show in 1986 and signed them on the spot, eventually releasing their self titled debut in 1989. Goss is the only constant member, with the lineup shifting around him across seven studio albums. Their 1992 record Sunrise on the Sufferbus featured none other than Ginger Baker of Cream on drums, and cracked the Top 10 rock charts with the single "She Got Me (When She Got Her Dress On)". The band is loosely tied to the Palm Desert Scene alongside Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age, and Goss has spent years producing for other acts in that orbit. After a long gap, Masters of Reality returned in 2025 with The Archer, their first studio album in 16 years.
