About

Matthew Barley is a cellist who refuses to stay in one lane. Based in London and performing across more than 50 countries, he has built a reputation for blending core classical repertoire with jazz, improvisation, electronics, and cross cultural collaborations with artists ranging from Ustad Amjad Ali Khan to Jon Lord of Deep Purple. A key part of his recital approach is pairing Bach suites with jazz and improvisation, which gives his concerts a genuinely unpredictable energy. Barley founded his performance and education group Between the Notes back in 1997, and has since premiered works from composers including James MacMillan, Pascal Dusapin, and Dai Fujikura. He toured Brett Dean's ballet score One of a Kind, performing it live on stage with electronics, and in 2013 he gave 100 concerts across the UK to mark the Britten centenary. His recordings for Signum Classics include The Protecting Veil by Tavener, and his duo project The Peasant Girl with violinist Viktoria Mullova spans gypsy music, jazz, and Bartók.
