Maxim Emelyanychev is one of those rare musicians who can step behind a harpsichord, pick up a cornett, and then turn around and lead a world class orchestra, all with equal conviction. Born in Dzerzhinsk, Russia, he became chief conductor of the period instrument ensemble Il Pomo d'Oro in 2016, building a reputation for vivid, historically informed performances and racking up recordings for labels like Erato and Aparté. His path to the Scottish Chamber Orchestra is a good story: he stepped in as an emergency substitute in March 2018, and the SCO was so impressed they named him principal conductor just two months later. That debut programme included Schubert's Ninth Symphony, which he and the SCO later committed to record for Linn Records. His contract has since been extended through at least 2028, and his work has earned him four Grammy nominations.
