About

Also known as: The Meat Puppets

Few bands bent punk as dramatically as the Meat Puppets did. Formed in Phoenix in 1980 around brothers Curt and Cris Kirkwood and drummer Derrick Bostrom, they started out playing short, goofy hardcore before quickly swerving into something far stranger: a brew of country, psychedelic rock and punk that had no real name at the time and helped define what people would later call cowpunk. Albums like Meat Puppets II and Up on the Sun became college radio staples and pushed them to the front of the SST Records roster alongside acts like the Violent Femmes and the Gun Club. The moment that brought them to a much wider audience came in 1993, when Curt and Cris joined Nirvana on stage for the legendary MTV Unplugged session, playing songs including "Plateau" and "Lake of Fire". That visibility fed straight into Too High to Die, their eighth studio album and biggest commercial success, which gave them "Backwater", still their best known song. The band split twice over the years but came back together in 2006, showing the Kirkwood brothers were not done yet.
