Meyhem Lauren, born James Rencher out of Queens, New York, has been one of hip hop's more quietly consistent figures since the mid 2000s. A founding member of the Smart Crew collective, he built a reputation for dense, layered rapping over production from some of the genre's most respected beatmakers. His 2012 project Respect the Fly Shit landed on Spin's list of the 40 best hip hop albums of that year, and Silk Pyramids, his 2014 collaboration with Buckwild, made The Village Voice's rundown of the best New York City rap albums of that year. He's never been shy about working across different creative partnerships. DJ Muggs, The Alchemist, Harry Fraud and Daringer have all helmed projects with him, each one bringing out a different shade of his style. Glass, produced entirely by Harry Fraud, showed a sleeker side, while Gems from the Equinox with DJ Muggs leaned heavier and more cinematic. Outside of music, he's a regular face on Fuck, That's Delicious, the food and culture show featuring Action Bronson.
