Few producers have shaped underground hip hop quite like The Alchemist, the Beverly Hills born beat architect whose sample heavy, cinematic style became a cornerstone of the genre. After a brief stint as a rapper in the early 90s duo the Whooliganz, he pivoted to production and never looked back, eventually embedding himself in the fabric of East Coast rap through landmark work with Mobb Deep, Nas, Jadakiss, and Ghostface Killah. His knack for flipping obscure samples into hypnotic, dusty loops gave him a signature sound that artists kept coming back for across decades. His solo and collaborative output is staggering in both quality and quantity. Alfredo with Freddie Gibbs scored a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album, while Voir Dire with Earl Sweatshirt and The Great Escape with Larry June kept critics buzzing well into the 2020s. He also co composed the official score for Grand Theft Auto V, which is about as left field a flex as you can pull off in hip hop. Whether he is behind the boards for Griselda, Boldy James, or Armand Hammer, the Alchemist seal of approval carries serious weight.
