Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats arrived fully formed in 2015 with their Stax debut, swapping Rateliff's quieter folk roots for a big, sweat soaked sound drenched in soul and rhythm and blues. Critics picked up on it fast, with AllMusic's Thom Jurek pointing to Rateliff's "world weary, deeply expressive tenor" as something that sets him apart from the wave of retro revivalists. Rolling Stone heard echoes of his folkie past in the wistful "Wasting Time", while The Guardian drew comparisons to Otis Redding, Chuck Berry and Van Morrison, calling him the "breakneck bar brawler of the new soul movement." Before the Night Sweats era, Rateliff had already put in serious miles, releasing records under names like The Wheel and Born in the Flood, and opening for Mumford and Sons on a European tour. The 2015 album scored a Metascore of 73 and marked a genuine gear shift, trading introspection for something looser, louder and a lot more fun to dance to.
