About

Also known as: Chor Des Nordwestdeutschen Rundfunks Hamburg, Chor des Norddeutschen Rundfunks, NDR Chor, NWDR-Chor

One of Germany's leading professional chamber choirs, the NDR Vokalensemble has been a fixture of Hamburg's musical life since its founding in 1946 as the choir of the Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk. Starting with 55 singers selected from over 2,000 applicants, the ensemble has trimmed down to 28 singers and leaned into chamber repertoire to match, which gives their sound a particular clarity and intimacy. Over the decades they've been at the centre of some genuinely landmark moments: the concert premiere of Schoenberg's opera Moses und Aron, the 1967 premiere of Ligeti's Lux aeterna, and the opening night of the Elbphilharmonie in January 2017, performing in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Their recording of all Brahms a cappella works, obsessively prepared over half a year of daily rehearsals, won the French Orphée d'Or and became something of a signature for the ensemble. They also picked up Hamburg's Johannes Brahms Medal in 2010. The choir regularly steps beyond the concert hall with family concerts, student workshops and school outreach, and since 2012 they've hosted SINGING!, a citywide sing along project started by composer Eric Whitacre. Klaas Stok has been at the helm since 2019, and in 2021 the ensemble officially took on the name NDR Vokalensemble.
