Coming out of San Francisco's psychedelic rock scene in 1969, New Riders of the Purple Sage took country rock somewhere genuinely strange and compelling. The band was essentially a Grateful Dead side project at first, with Jerry Garcia on pedal steel, Mickey Hart on drums, and Phil Lesh occasionally on bass, alongside founders John "Marmaduke" Dawson and David Nelson. Their original sound mixed traditional bluegrass, Bakersfield style country, and a psychedelic sensibility that owed something to the Flying Burrito Brothers. Their commercial peak came with The Adventures of Panama Red in 1973, which went gold and featured guests including Buffy Sainte Marie and the Memphis Horns. The classic lineup of Dawson, Nelson, Dave Torbert, Spencer Dryden, and Buddy Cage defined what most fans think of as the core NRPS sound. The band went through countless lineup changes over the decades but kept performing and recording, releasing new studio albums as late as 2009 and 2012.
