Few bands have shifted as restlessly across moods and styles as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, the Melbourne born outfit that's been unsettling listeners since 1983. Cave and drummer Mick Harvey built the group out of the ashes of the Birthday Party, pulling in international talent from the start, including Einstürzende Neubauten's Blixa Bargeld and Magazine's Barry Adamson. Their early records leaned hard into post punk, gothic blues and Southern Americana, but the band kept evolving, album by album, never settling. By the mid 1990s they'd hit a commercial peak with Murder Ballads, its duet with Kylie Minogue on Where the Wild Roses Grow becoming a genuine worldwide hit. The Boatman's Call followed as both an artistic and commercial success. After Harvey left in 2009, the sound shifted again toward electronic and ambient textures, running through Push the Sky Away, Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen. Their most recent studio album, Wild God, arrived in 2024, eighteen albums deep and still pushing.
