About
Nicko McBrain has been the beating heart of Iron Maiden's rhythm section since 1982, when he quietly slipped into the band by making his first TV appearance disguised as the band's mascot Eddie, before news of his predecessor Clive Burr's departure had even broken. From Piece of Mind onward, his drumming became foundational to the Maiden sound: guitarist Adrian Smith has said that much of what the band built after Nicko joined was "founded on his playing", those relentlessly busy patterns and rapid tom fills that defined tracks like "Where Eagles Dare". He also picked up a songwriting credit for "New Frontier" on Dance of Death, a track opposing human cloning that reflected his Christian faith. After more than four decades on the road, McBrain retired from live touring in December 2024 following a final show in São Paulo, though he stays on as a full band member for studio work.
