Nubiyan Twist, the nine piece collective from Leeds, builds its sound by pulling together jazz, afrobeat, soul, hip hop, dub and reggae into something that hits hard on a dancefloor while still rewarding close listening. Led by producer and guitarist Tom Excell, the band operates with the kind of tight, percussive energy you'd expect from a big band that genuinely swings. Their music occasionally brings to mind the acid jazz of the nineties, but the blend of global rhythms and British jazz sensibility keeps things firmly rooted in the present. Over five albums the group has built a reputation for translating the loose, euphoric feeling of their live shows into studio recordings. Chasing Shadows is their fifth record, and it captures the party atmosphere that has become their live trademark. With a rotating cast of virtuoso players and a deep commitment to rhythm, Nubiyan Twist is the kind of act that makes genre labels feel beside the point.
